3DC

3DC, short for 3D - Digital Communication, was an ambitious project I undertook with five fellow students during our third year of study. Our mission? To create an immersive 3D game that introduces players to the Faculty of Communication & Journalism and the Digital Communication program. Through engaging assignments and clever puzzles, players could explore the world of our faculty in an innovative and interactive way.

Under the guidance of training manager Mr. W. Spee, we dove headfirst into the project. Initially, we experimented with the Irrlicht engine, a graphics-focused tool. However, it quickly became clear that it lacked the features needed for our game. We moved to Quest3D, but its commercial licensing made it impractical for an educational setting. Finally, we discovered the newly released CryEngine 3 —famous for powering Far Cry 2 and Crysis 2— which was free for academic use. This proved to be the perfect platform for bringing our vision to life.
